4.1. Methodological overview

The methodology followed in this course is oriented towards the achievement of the learning objectives. A wide range of teaching and learning tasks are implemented, such as lectures, practice sessions, autonomous work, study and assessment tasks.

Students are expected to participate actively in class throughout the semester.

Further information regarding the course will be provided on the first day of class.

4.2. Learning tasks

The course includes the following learning tasks:

  • Compulsory reading: R. Maisch y F. Pohlhammer, Instituciones Griegas, Barcelona, 1931.
  • Reading and commentary on literary texts of significant Greek authors.

4.3. Syllabus

The course will address the following topics:

  • Topic 1. Introduction:  periods of Greek culture and history.
  • Topic 2. The epic age.
  • Topic 3. Archaic Greece: crisis and conflicts.
  • Topic 4. The awakening of Ionic philosophy.
  • Topic 5. The Persian wars. Herodotus.
  • Topic 6. The 5th century. The polis.
  • Topic 7. The 4th century. The Platonic and Isocratean paideia.
  • Topic 8. Greek mankind: a synthesis.
